01 / Problem statement

A demanding manual process needed a reliable repeat.

Spreading railroad tracks to a specified gauge required an impact-driven tool to be set up precisely, repeatedly, and safely. The opportunity was to turn a largely manual operation into a controlled automated system without losing the directness that makes the equipment effective in the field.

A system designed around repeatable control.

I designed, constructed, and integrated the automation system around the device’s existing impact-driven action. The implementation focused on translating target distances into dependable mechanical movement while keeping the controls clear for field operation and future servicing.
